From Nancy Pelosi – Democratic Leader
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed 51 years ago today. Ever since, it has stood as a pillar of fairness, justice, and equality.
The law was born from the daily courage of millions of Americans, who dared to hope for a day not marred by discrimination and segregation. Today, we remember the signing of the Civil Rights Act as a great day — and as a call to continue the work of achieving equality.
At the time of its signing, it was acknowledged that the Civil Rights Act would not be complete without a companion law to ensure that citizens could exercise their right to vote free of discrimination. The Voting Rights Act (VRA) was that law, but the conservative Supreme Court gutted it just a few years ago — leaving countless Americans vulnerable to voter suppression.
As we observe this important anniversary, let’s also recommit ourselves to restoring the VRA. Sign the petition and call on Congress to restore the Voting Rights Act.
Republicans across the country continue using their scare tactics on voting rights. They use the specter of “voter fraud” to pass laws that unfairly affect minority communities, the poor, students, and the elderly.
Voter fraud isn’t actually a problem. Republicans know that. They’re not trying to make elections better — they’re trying to keep certain groups from voting in large numbers in order to win more elections.
Congress can restore the Voting Rights Act. And the sooner we do it, the better.
Call on Congress to restore the VRA and protect the voting rights of every eligible American.
Thank you.
Nancy
